Nose Reshaping and Contouring
The nose is a very important facial feature. Although this operation is anatomically straightforward, it requires the most meticulous of surgical skills. The aim is to sculpt a "new nose'" that will blend and harmonise the whole face. A patient usually has an idea of the shape of nose desired, but this must be realistic. Results are limited to the original shape of your nose. Matching someone else's features may not match your own. Although surgical changes to the nose should be subtle, the overall facial transformation can be very significant.
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the medical term used to describe a nose operation. It is one of the most frequently requested types of cosmetic procedures for men. It reshapes and realigns the nose either to correct a deformity that resulted from injury, a hereditary birth defect or to relieve nasal obstruction.
When is it best to have rhinoplasty?
You may wish to have a rhinoplasty to improve your overall facial appearance, especially if you are sensitive, self-conscious or shy about the way your nose looks. With regards to teenagers, it is usually recommended that they wait until the bones of the face are mature before undergoing cosmetic nasal surgery. In girls, growth of the nose is usually complete at 16 years, and in boys at 17 years. Despite feeling embarrassed or distressed about the shape of their nose, not all teenagers are physically ready for this surgery.
What results can I expect?
The degree of improvement depends to a large extent on the basic structure of your nose and skin. Minor adjustments are occasionally required. Major changes are apparent immediately, but your nose will continue to change to a certain degree for up to 2-3 months. It usually takes six to nine months for all the subtler contour changes to take place. This process cannot be hurried and nature must be allowed to take its course. You should always keep in mind that the desired result is an improvement, not perfection. It is a lengthy process and patience and understanding are required.
How about bruising and swelling?
Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common, but subside quickly; swelling of the nose subsides more slowly and some numbness may be present for a few months. External splints are used to support the nose after the operation and internal nose cotton packs may be used to absorb fluid for a few days after the operation.
Will the procedure leave any scars?
Usually incisions are made inside the nostrils and are therefore not visible. Sometimes incisions are used on the lower part of the nose between the two nostrils.
Can it be performed with chin surgery?
Many people request to have their chin corrected to balance the face when seen on side profile. This can help to achieve a more balanced and natural-looking profile. It is important to have a detailed computer analysis performed of the whole face to make sure that a pleasing balance exists between chin and nose.
Is an overnight stay in hospital required?
Rhinoplasty may be performed as a day case or alternatively with a short overnight stay at the hospital. This will depend on your general health and the extent of the procedure, and you should seek advice during the consultation.
When can I resume normal activities?
Returning to your normal activities is an individual matter and should be discussed during the consultation. Most patients are able to return to work after a week.
